Embodying the archetype of the Fool, Body Spells celebrated mystery, trust, and playful collaboration by combining the ritual magic of oracle readings and tattooing. From 2019-2021 we each created intuitive drawings on every New and Full moon. We merged these sets of drawings into compositions which then became the mystery cards in our 78 card oracle deck. In the fall of 2019 we began hosting Body Spells events during which querents would pull a card from the deck followed by a reading and discussion about the mystery image. Next, we’d all three strategize together how to best make a tattoo from the image on the card in a way that would celebrate the meaning that resonated most with the querent. Sometimes the image would be tattooed as-is, sometimes color would be added, sometimes elements of the design would be tattooed in different placements across the body. All tattoos were made by both artists utilizing both machine and handpoking tattoo techniques. Each card, reading and tattoo are very unique. Body Spells events have taken place in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Minneapolis, Chicago and Columbus, Ohio. Below are the cards that have been revealed. I have a private studio on the second floor. Handpoke tattoo appointments with me can sometimes be long. On average each appointment is 3-4 hours in duration, though some appointments are shorter and some longer. Tattooing typically takes place lying down on a massage table or sitting up in a folding chair. Breaks are important to strech, hydrate and have snacks if needed. My work explores a variety of styles, lineweights, textures and varying levels of detail. Because of this it can sometimes be difficult for me to predict how long a handpoked tattoo will take to make and also how much it will cost. Cost includes tattoo time, size, detail and placement. Adding color, custom modifications, and/or difficult placements will add to the cost.&nbsp; I do not charge solely based on time, however, my rough hourly estimate is &nbsp;$175/hour.My appointment minimum is 2 hours.&nbsp;Most appointments range from $350-$800, depending on all of the factors listed above. The appointment minimum could potentially cover the cost of multiple small tattoos, depending on placement and detail.I put a lot of time and effort into designing unique and thought-provoking pieces. Do you offer touchups? Yes! I will always make time in my schdule for touchups; please don’t be shy! Before you reach out for a touchup please know:My tattoos are handmade and they are designed to heal with varying textures, values and lineweights. My work embraces the look of handpoke!&nbsp;Sometimes tattoos may heal unevenly, or certain parts of the design may need another pass to bring out the desired contrast. Color tattoos from me often have a softer and less-saturated healed look than color tattoos from a machine. I generally rely on black and greywash inks and add color as an accent to the design. Typically a color test is a small assortment of different colored dots or lines tattooed in a discreet area to see how color heals on your skin.Color tests are free for anyone with darker skin pigmentation. All other tests are $30 to cover materials.If you are getting an all-red tattoo and don’t have any red ink yet, I strongly suggest coming in for a red color test prior to your appointment. If you want a color test before you get a tattoo from me we will schedule two appointments, the first one being the color test and then about 1.5 months later we’ll see how the colors healed and we can create your tattoo with desired colors. What is the difference between a handpoke and a machine made tattoo?Handpoked tattoos are made of a series of small, singular dots put into the skin with a tattoo needle poked by hand. No machine is involved in this process. Ink is being depositied into the same layer of skin as a mchine-made tattoo and handpoked tattoos are just as permanent. Handpoked tattoos can take a while to create, which is why it is not my preference to tattoo medium to larger pieces on sensitive areas such as the side ribs. My handpoked tattoos have a more speckled, hand drawn feel to them. My tattoos are designed to incorporate the subtle variety of inconsistencies and textures that are natural to this tattooing process.&nbsp;I find the building up of dotwork and textures to be very sculptural.
